I met ‘Ying’ about 6 months ago when she was invited to a Bible study I was facilitating. Over the last 6 months she has read, along with the several of her peers, about the events leading up to the Messiah’s arrival. We are now studying the life of Jesus. Her spiritual wrestling is still on a preliminary, philosophical level. She doesn’t know whether to trust the Bible yet. Recently, we have been having some interesting conversations. Two weeks ago I asked Ying my new favorite question: “If you could ask God one question, what would it be?” She said, “I would ask Him what He means by ‘sin.’” (i.e. What is ‘sin’?) I responded by saying, “That’s a very good question…can I ask you a question?” I said, “Do you believe in right and wrong, or good and evil?”
She said, “Sometimes I think I do, but other times I feel like I’m not sure…it’s those times that I feel distressed. That’s why I joined the Bible study–so that I could look for the answer.” I was surprised to hear this. I told her, “In my opinion, sin is when you have an opportunity to love God or people with your choices, but you choose to do something hurtful or selfish instead.” She said that on some level this made sense to her, but that she still wasn’t sure. Ying and I continue to talk about the truth on a weekly basis. Please pray that Ying will dig deep into God’s Word for answers.
