Discipleship is not really taught in a Sunday morning worship service.
Traditionally on Sunday mornings one worships, is inspired, fellowships, even in Sunday school you learn about the faith in an academic manner. Discipleship is just different.
When I was taught how to ride a bike my father didn’t bring the bike into the kitchen and describe the intricacies of the design, function, and potential of bike riding. He took me out into the back yard and helped me through trial and error. His hand was on me, holding me, guiding me. Then it seemed like all of a sudden I was riding my bike. Later on I studied about the bike, the design, function and the potential. This is how discipleship should work.
Discipleship should be about living in Christ with one another. It is sharing and learning from someone you know cares about you. It is often taught by example. It is more about how do you care for the widow, or the orphan than just praying about it. It is about living in the world and not letting the world stain you!
Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. (James 1:21-25, ESV)
