Sudan is experiencing a violent crisis that is leading to millions of displaced people. 1.8 million people have escaped the violence of Sudan’s civil war to find refuge in Chad, Egypt, or other nearby countries. At least an additional 6 million have left their homes but remain inside the border of Sudan.
In the U.S., the Sudanese community tends to be spread out in small urban clusters. The largest communities have been in the Midwest, in Des Moines and Omaha, but there are significant Sudanese populations in the Dallas-Ft. Worth and Metro D.C. areas. As more Sudanese seek refuge from violence and upheaval that will likely impact the region for decades to come, more opportunities to serve Sudanese arriving in global cities in North America, Europe, and other East African nations will likely emerge.
More than 90% of Sudanese are from Muslim backgrounds, and GCMI team members have heard accounts of forced conversions in the country’s past. Disciples of Jesus with a desire to share good news with the nations of Northeast Africa may discover opportunities to be the hands & feet of Christ among Sudanese in cities outside of the war-torn nation.

Hello, my name is pastor James Akoon Akot. I’m reaching out from South Sudan. I work for Life Changing Ministries as a Ministry coordinator. Life Changing Ministries is a discipleship making initiative that focuses on church discipleship. We work with Sudanese who are seeking refugees from violence in Sudan. Our Ministry focuses on Discipleship of Muslims and try to show the act of Love to them.
Therefore, we’re requesting for partnership with GCM in working with refugees and also disciple the church together here to be welcoming to refugees.
Looking forward to hearing from you and we discuss more on this.
Blessings,
James Akoon
